What It Means - Day 356

"The month of Ramadan is that wherein the Quran was sent down as guidance for mankind, as clear proofs of guidance, and as the Criterion. Let him among you who is present fast during that -month]. And whosoever is ill or on a journey, it is a number of other days, God desires ease for you, and He does not desire hardship for you. [It is] so that you may complete the number and magnify God for having guided you, that haply you may give thanks."
Quran 2:185

Here's another passage drawn from al-Baqarah, usually rendered as "The Cow," the longest surah in the Quran. We're continuing the discussion of Ramadan. When we discuss Ramadan in class, or for that matter with any non-Muslim, they ask if fasting is required if you're sick, and obviously the answer is no. The same goes for if you're travelling. You just need to make up the days. As we are told several times in the Quran, "God desires ease for you, and He does not desire hardship for you." It's not that God is always going to make things easy, but rather that the goal is not to make you suffer.
