An absolutely delicious mango ice tea that I enjoyed in a nice restaurant right next to the ruins in Byblos, Lebanon. The shot was taken right before I managed to knock the entire thing into my lap. I may have said bad words.
There is an old saying that goes, "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans." I thought it was Persian, but actually I think it is attributed to Woody Allen. Either way, it seems to describe my life over the last few years pretty accurately. I initially set up this blog because I was doing a lot of travelling, and then I was supposed to be doing a lot less travelling - which is why I changed the name to On the Way Home (one of my favorite Neil Young songs). Naturally, [and insert divine laughter] I'm going to be spending the next school year living in Abu Dhabi and teaching and serving as an assistant dean at Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates. The offer was unexpected, but if I've learned anything (and that is probably debateable) it is to follow where life leads.
"Throwing away then all things, hold to these only which are few; and besides bear in mind that every man lives only this present time, which is an indivisible point, and that all the rest of his life is either past or it is uncertain. Short then is the time which every man lives, and small the nook of the earth where he lives; and short too the longest posthumous fame, and even this only continued by a succession of poor human beings, who will very soon die, and who know not even themselves, much less him who died long ago."
