"'And turn not thy cheek at men in scorn, nor walk exultantly upon the earth. Surely God loves not any vainglorious boaster.'"
Quran 31:18
And Luqman continues his advice to his son, which forms the core of surah 31. Modesty and humility sit at the heart of Islam. I remember a couple years ago a bunch of Muslims were involved in a chain where they were discussing their faith and then ending it with the hashtag #ProudToBeAMuslim. One guy popped in and said, essentially, albeit gently, is this what we're really about? Shouldn't we be humble to be a Muslim? It was a simple moment, but also one that many people in the discussion found moving. I used to joke that I'm the poster child for hubris, and hopefully Islam has taken the edge off a bit.
